Thunderstorm Microburst Brings Powerful Winds and Property Damage to San Ysidro?

4/23/2024 (Permalink)

A wet microburst produces heavy rainfall and strong winds. We restore storm damage near you 24 hours a day in San Diego.

SERVPRO® has been busy restoring storm damage in San Diego County this year. A thunderstorm microburst is a localized, intense downdraft of air that occurs within a thunderstorm. Microbursts can produce powerful and sudden wind gusts that can cause significant damage; however, microbursts are not accompanied by the rotating winds characteristic of tornadoes.

There are two primary types of microbursts:

Wet Microburst: A wet microburst occurs when the descending air within the thunderstorm is saturated with precipitation. As the air reaches the ground, it spreads out and produces heavy rainfall and strong winds. Wet microbursts can cause flash flooding and are particularly hazardous to aviation due to the sudden onset of intense turbulence and wind shear.

Dry Microburst: A dry microburst occurs when the descending air within the thunderstorm is not saturated with precipitation until it reaches the surface. Dry microbursts typically produce little to no rainfall at the surface but can still generate powerful wind gusts capable of causing damage.

Microbursts can be extremely dangerous, especially for aviation, as they can cause sudden and unpredictable changes in wind speed and direction near the ground. These conditions can pose significant hazards to aircraft during takeoff, landing, and low-level flight.
