San Ysidro Home Suffers Flooding from Soil Erosion During Rainstorm?

4/2/2024 (Permalink)

A muddy dog sits in a backyard with soil erosion due to a recent downpour. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24 hours a day in San Diego.

Our local Otay Mesa/San Ysidro teams have been busy this year responding to storm damage emergencies caused by heavy rain. Some of our customers have experienced water damage due to soil erosion from heavy rain. Heavy rain can cause soil erosion and water intrusion issues in a home due to its sheer volume and intensity. Here's how:

Soil Erosion

The force of heavy rainfall can dislodge soil particles and carry them away, especially in areas where the soil is not adequately protected by vegetation or landscaping. As the rain hits the ground with high velocity, it can create rivulets and runoff channels, washing away the topsoil and exposing the underlying earth. This erosion can lead to loss of soil fertility, destabilization of slopes, and degradation of landscapes.

Foundation Damage

When the soil around a home erodes due to heavy rain, it can compromise the stability of the foundation. As soil washes away from the base of the house, it can create voids or uneven settling, causing the foundation to shift or crack.

Surface Water Accumulation

In addition to soil erosion, a torrential downpour can overwhelm drainage systems and lead to surface water accumulation around the home. If the ground becomes saturated with water faster than it can drain away, puddles or standing water may form near the foundation.
