A carbon monoxide sensor is mounted on a wall in a home. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day in San Diego.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is called an “invisible killer” because this type of gas is odorless and colorless. It is caused when fuels like gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, oil, and methane burn incompletely. Our local teams in Otay Mesa and San Ysidro restore fire damage 24-hours a day in Otay Mesa. Carbon monoxide (CO) sensors save lives. Here are some CO safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • CO alarms should be installed in a central location outside each sleeping area, on every level of the home, and in other locations required by applicable laws, codes, or standards. For the best protection, interconnect all CO alarms throughout the house.
  • Call your local fire department’s non-emergency number to find out what number to call if the CO alarm sounds
  • If the CO alarm sounds, immediately move to a fresh air location outdoors or by an open window or door. Make sure everyone inside the home is accounted for. Call for help from a fresh air location and stay there until emergency personnel declare that it is safe to re-enter the home.

Ember Fire in Otay Mesa?

1/5/2022 (Permalink)

Sparks are flying through the night air. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day in San Diego.

Do you know that burning embers can travel for more than a mile? SERVPRO® of Otay Mesa/San Ysidro offers this information from the National Fire Protection Association about embers:

  • Embers are burning pieces of airborne wood and or vegetation that can be carried more than a mile through the wind that can cause spot fires and ignite homes, debris, and other objects
  • Research around home destruction versus home survival in wildfires points to embers and small flames as the main way that the majority of homes ignite
  • There are methods for homeowners to prepare their homes to withstand ember attacks and minimize the likelihood of flames or surface fire touching the home or any attachments
  • Experiments, models, and post-fire studies show that homes ignite due to the home’s condition and everything around it, up to 200 feet from the foundation. This is called the Home Ignition Zone.
  • HOME IGNITION ZONES To increase your home’s chance of surviving a wildfire, choose fire-resistant building materials and limit the amount of flammable vegetation in the three home ignition zones. The zones include the Immediate Zone: (0 to 5 feet around the house), the Intermediate Zone (5 to 30 feet), and the Extended Zone (30 to 100 feet).

  • Test AFCIs and GFCIs once a month according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Know Your Ways Out in the Event of a Home Fire

4/1/2021 (Permalink)

Map of a house and escape routes You need to have an escape route created for your home.

A home fire in Pine Valley, CA, is a scary concept, but one everyone should be prepared for. Knowing your fire escape plan is just as important to fire preparation as maintaining smoke alarms and having firefighting equipment like extinguishers ready in your home.

Creating Your Escape Route

For every person in your home, you need to have an escape route prepared. Each person’s route should include:

  • A primary escape route
  • A secondary escape route
  • A rendezvous point

The primary escape route should be through an easily accessible ground floor exit, such as the front door. Secondary escapes should be thoroughly discussed with each member of the family in the event that the primary route is blocked by fire. A secondary route may involve exiting through second-story windows; if so, make sure there is an escape ladder stored near the egress window.
Often overlooked, the post-exit meeting point is a critical element of your fire escape plan. It can be by the mailbox, at a neighbor’s home, or on the curb across the street, so long as it is a safe distance from your home.

Knowing Your Back-Up Plan
In the unlikely scenario that every one of your planned escape routes is compromised, ensure that your family knows how to shelter in place. Closing doors slows the spread of fire and smoke, keeping you safe longer as well as decreasing property damage and the need for fire restoration services. Stuffing towels, especially ones that are wet, in the space between the bottom of a door and floor can keep smoke out of a room. Have something on hand you can use to signal your location to rescuers when they arrive, like a brightly colored shirt or towel.
Take time to talk about your fire escape plan with your family so that when the dust has settled, all of you are safe and ready to start on the work of restoring your home.

3 Fire Prevention Tips Every Business Should Know

2/22/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke detectors on evacuation plans Every business in Otay Mesa, CA, should have a fire prevention plan.

3 Fire Prevention Tips Every Business Should Know

Every business in Otay Mesa, CA should have a fire prevention plan. It doesn't even have to be super elaborate to pay benefits. Even a few meetings a year could be enough to stop a fire from happening in a restaurant or production facility. Just getting employees and managers thinking about the possibility of a fire and how damaging it could be is a step in the right direction. Here are three broad actions a company can take to reduce exposure to a business fire.

1. Contact Helpful Resources. Every community has its share of knowledgeable organizations that deal with preventing fire. This could include the nearby fire department or the fire marshal. Many of these organizations will come into a company and shore up fire prevention efforts. A company can also find online resources and publications that offer help. The National Fire Protection Association provides handbooks and pamphlets that educate companies. A company should know what local fire remediation franchise to contact for cleanup after a fire.

2. Buy Fire Protection Equipment. The minimum level of fire prevention for a company should include a couple of fire extinguishers on hand and a series of smoke alarms throughout the property. Fire extinguishers can put out a small fire and prevent the fire from becoming a major problem that puts lives and property at risk. An alarm system will give employees and customers advance notice of a fire. The next level of protection involves a fire sprinkler system that can quickly douse a fire even when the building is empty. This will significantly reduce fire damage.

3. Educate Employees. Employees should know where to go in the case of a fire and who to call for help. They should also understand that fire prevention is everyone's job. Employees, especially those who work around stoves or fire hazards, should be encouraged to spot problems and suggest timely fixes.

Keeping Your Pet Safe During a Fire Emergency

12/10/2020 (Permalink)

Pomeranian dressed as fire fighter Did you include your family pets in the planning process?

Three Ways To Plan For Your Pets' Safety In The Event Of An Emergency

You are adamant about making sure that your family has a fire emergency plan in San Ysidro, CA. Everyone knows their escape routes, how to safely exit a home on fire, and where to meet once you make it safely outside. However, did you include your family pets in the planning process? While getting your human family out of a home fire is your number-one priority, you want to plan for the safety of your furry family members, too. Here are three ways to plan for your pets' safety in the event of an emergency.

1. Practice
While you and your family are conducting an annual practice session of your fire emergency plan, practice bringing your pets with you. Many animals can be trained to come when called, so if you haven't prioritized training your pet, now is the time to start. Remember that although you love your animals, never go back into a burning building to try and rescue a pet that hasn't evacuated.

2. Contain
If your pets generally have the run of the house while you're away, consider containing them to an area of the house that is near an outer door. A pet safety plan prevents them from inadvertently starting a fire, plus they're more easily able to be accessed by firefighters. They should always wear their collars, and keep a leash by the door to aid your pet's rescuer.

3. Prepare
Think ahead to what you would do with your pet if you have to stay away from your home after a fire. Don't forget to consider the amount of time that would be required to have an emergency restoration company restore your home. A pet preparation plan should include a place to stay for your pet, access to ownership and vaccination records stored digitally or in a firebox, and a disaster supply kit.
When planning for a fire emergency at your home, don't forget to include your pets in your evacuation plan.
